Just Had a Car Accident? What to Do in the First 24 Hours
One moment you are driving home. The next, you hear the crunch of metal.
Even a small accident can leave you shaken, confused, and unsure of what to do next. Your heart is racing, other drivers are watching, and you have a dozen questions running through your head at once.
That is completely normal.
The good news is that the first 24 hours after an accident follow a fairly simple path. Knowing the steps ahead of time makes it much easier to protect yourself, your vehicle, and your insurance claim.
At JJ Autobody, we help drivers across the Los Angeles area get back on the road after collisions every day. Here is what we recommend doing right after an accident.

Make Sure Everyone Is Safe First
Your car can be repaired. People come first.
Check yourself and your passengers for injuries. If anyone is hurt, call 911 right away. Even if everyone feels fine, keep in mind that some injuries do not show up until hours later.
If the vehicles can be moved and it is safe to do so, pull over to the shoulder or a nearby parking lot. Turn on your hazard lights so other drivers can see you.
Document Everything at the Scene
Your phone is one of the most useful tools you have after an accident.
Before anything is moved or cleaned up, take photos of:
- Damage to every vehicle involved
- License plates
- The full scene, including traffic signs and signals
- Skid marks or debris on the road
- Weather and road conditions
- Any visible injuries
Take more photos than you think you need. Close-ups show detail, and wide shots show how everything happened.
Exchange the Right Information
Get the following from every driver involved:
- Full name and phone number
- Driver’s license number
- Insurance company and policy number
- Vehicle make, model, and color
- License plate number
If there are witnesses, ask for their names and phone numbers too. A neutral witness can make a big difference later.
Stay calm and polite, but avoid apologizing or admitting fault at the scene. Let the facts and the insurance companies sort that out.
Do Not Judge the Damage by Looks Alone
This is where many drivers make a mistake.
The car still starts. The bumper only has a few scuffs. Maybe the damage looks too small to bother with.
But modern vehicles are built with crumple zones, sensors, brackets, and supports hidden behind the bumper cover and panels. A light impact can bend or crack those parts without leaving much visible damage on the outside.
Signs that something deeper may be wrong include:
- The car pulls to one side
- Doors, hood, or trunk do not close the way they used to
- New noises, rattles, or vibrations
- Warning lights on the dashboard
- Gaps between panels that look uneven
If you notice any of these, get the vehicle inspected before driving it long distances.
Call Your Insurance Company
Most insurance policies ask you to report an accident as soon as possible.
When you call, have your photos, the other driver’s information, and the location and time of the accident ready. Write down your claim number and the name of the adjuster assigned to your case.
Keep all of your notes, receipts, and messages in one place. It makes the rest of the process much smoother.
Know That You Can Choose Your Body Shop
Your insurance company may suggest a shop, but in California you have the right to choose where your vehicle is repaired.
Picking a shop you trust means you know who is working on your car and how it will be repaired.
At JJ Autobody, we work with all major insurance companies and can communicate with your insurer directly, so you do not have to manage every phone call yourself.
Get a Professional Estimate Early
The sooner your vehicle is inspected, the sooner you know what you are dealing with.
A professional estimate helps document the full extent of the damage, including problems that are not obvious at first. That information supports your insurance claim and helps make sure the repair plan covers everything the vehicle actually needs.
Waiting too long can make it harder to connect hidden damage to the original accident.
Holiday Traffic Means More Fender Benders
The end of the year is one of the busiest times on Southern California roads.
Holiday shopping, crowded parking lots, Thanksgiving travel, and shorter days all add up. More cars on the road and less daylight usually means more minor collisions.
Keeping these steps in mind before the season gets busy can save you a lot of stress if something does happen.
